Creating CG Set Extensions For HBO’s Confirmation

June 2, 2016

Shade developed visual effects to ground HBO’s newest political drama back in the true life from which it came.

Confirmation delves into the explosive real life 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas and the subsequent political and legal scandal that ensued, making headlines across the nation. Written by Susannah Grant who was Oscar-nominated for her work on Erin Brockovich and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Confirmation stars Kerry Washington, Wendell Pierce, Greg Kinnear, Jeffrey Wright, Eric Stonestreet and Jennifer Hudson.

In the film, on-set performances are integrated with archival news footage to drive the film’s media-driven narrative. Shot entirely in Atlanta, VFX were necessary to recreate landmarks such as Capitol Hill, Russell Senate Office Building, and the interior of the caucus room itself. Shade completed a lot of heavy CG set extensions to incorporate these locations, creating some entirely CG shots of Washington DC in the process.

We’re extremely proud to have been involved in another exceptional HBO production, helping to bring to life an era and a case that brought the country to a standstill then, and still has so much relevance now.
